A narrow track railroad was build to connect Swakopmund with Windhoek and the beautiful railway station remains unchanged since it was built in 1901. The beaches are very wide and empty, but can get unpleasantly windy.|A few kilometers from Swakopmund on the road to Windhoek you will find an old steam-engine that got stuck there after only a few journeys of bringing goods to Windhoek in 1896. It has recently been restored and serves as monument in memory of the first settlers' struggle in the area.|Swakopmund is the ideal starting point for excursions into the desert and to the Cape Cross seal reserve. There are numerous hotels, restaurants and bars in town. Swakopmund is connected with the capital by rail and road. The city is 260 km west of Windhoek, on the Atlantic coast.";
