n["tórshavn"][1]="Tórshavn was founded around 825 AD, when the first Norwegian settlers, known as Landnämsmenn, colonized the Faroe islands. The town was named after one of the old Nordic Gods, Thor. Tórshavn means 'Thor's Harbour'. The Norwegian settlers were not the first inhabitants of the Faroe Islands. Archaeological evidence shows that Irish monks had stayed in the Faroe Islands a hundred years earlier (727 AD).|Tórshavn has only about 15,000 inhabitants. It is one of the smallest administrative capitals in the world, but it is a modern place, certainly not a backwater. There are many interesting sights in Tórshavn, including several museums, parks, churches, monuments and other special buildings.|Skansin is a fortification that was built in 1580, to protect the town against pirates. The fortress was later modernized and enlarged. During the times of the Napoleonic wars, around 1800, it was considered the strongest fortification in Northern Europe. When the British occupied the Faroe Islands in WWII (1939-1945), Skansin was used as headquarters for the Royal Navy Command.|The small promontory Tinganes, in the town's thriving harbor, is the site of the world's oldest, still active, parliament, LÞgtingið. The first Norwegian settlers established their parliament, or Ting, there in 825 AD. In the year 999, Sigmund Brestisson, a Faroese who turned a Norwegian house Carl, introduced Christianity on this Ting. Around Tinganes you will also fond some of Tórshavn's oldest buildings, many of which date from the 16th and 17th centuries and are still intact.|Tórshavn's Town Square is immediately next to LÞgtingið. There you will also fins the Town Municipality. It is a busy place with a pedestrian street leading northwards through one of Tórshavn's main shopping areas.|The S.M.S. Shopping Center is situated less than half a mile from the town square at R.C. EffersÞesgÞta, one of the busy thoroughfares of the town. It provides many facilities, including a bank, post office and pharmacy, as well as numerous shops.|In the center of Tórshavn is a hill with an obelisk. The obelisk is known as Kongaminnið. It was erected in 1882 to commemorate the first visit ever by a Danish king to the Faroe Islands.|The Nordic House was consecrated in 1983. The Nordic governments established it to have closer connection between the cultures of their countries. It is a unique building that offers many different possibilities for exhibitions, performances, concerts etc.|There are several hotels and restaurants in Tórshavn. The town is on southern part of the island of Stromo. Tórshavn has air connections with KÞbnhavn (Copenhagen) in Denmark.";
