The area is rich in natural sources, which include coal and oil. Xi'an used to be an important trading city on the crossroads of several important trading routes between eastern China and central Asia. It was once one of the most magnificent cities in the world. Nowadays it is one of China's major tourist attractions, mainly because the Army of Terracotta Warriors was excavated there in 1974. It sits on Xi'an's eastern outskirts and consists of a collection of more that 10,000 stone figures of soldiers, archers (armed with real weapons) and chariots. The all stand in battle formation in underground vaults. The figures were hand made and even nowadays you can still see the details of their faces, looking fierce and war-like.|Other sights in Xi'an include the old city walls, the Muslim quarter and the Banpo Neolithic Village, which displays a village of the Stone Age.|There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Xi'an. The city has rail and air connections with Beijing, as well as bus connections with regional destinations. Xi'an is the capital of the Shaanxi province and lies 920 km southwest of Beijing.";

Xiahe has bus connections with Lanzhou.";

There is little of interest in Xining, but the Ta'er Monastery, some 26 km southeast of town, is well worth a visit. It is one of the six great monasteries of the Yellow Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is decorated with sculptures of human figures and animals, as well as landscapes carved out of yak butter. Another interesting place to visit is Qinghai Hu, the largest lake in China. It is about 140 km west of town.|There are several hotels and restaurants in town. Xining is 1310 km southwest of Beijing.";

The area around lake Lop Nur has been a nuclear test area for the Chinese army since 1964. Another lake, Tianchi lies in a beautiful mountainous area, some 115 km west from Xinjiang's capital of Ãrümqi. Other interesting sights include the towns of Kashi (Kashgar) and Turpan, as well as the Karakoram Highway.";
